Deadly Earthquake in China's Tibetan Area

A beautiful Tibetan community Yushu in China's Qinghai (青海), the home province of a half Han half Tibetan Chinese boy who later became 14th Dalai Lama

Yushu after a 7.1-magnitude quake on Wednsday morning shortly before 8am.

The military police rushed to the scene in the first instance and dug through the rubble with their bare hands before the rescue equipments were able to be brought into the site, and by nightfall that day they pulled out 960 survirors from the collapsed buildings. Cranes and bulldozers soon arrived to carry out search and rescure operations.

 
     

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (温家宝) emerged in quake-ravaged Yushu to inspect rescue and relief progress.

 

Qinghai Provicial chief Luo Huining (省长骆惠宁) monitored the rescue and relief work on site.

     
 
     

China Mobile Communications Corporation (中国移动) promptly sent staff to the disaster area to provide free service to anyone who needs to communicate with outside world.

 

Relief centres were quickly built.
